Who TherapyNotes is best for
TherapyNotes launched in November 2010. It was created by Dr. Debra Pliner, a licensed clinical psychologist, and Brad Pliner, who ran an IT consulting firm, after they first built an electronic records system for her group mental health practice. It is designed only for mental health and runs in a web browser, with a companion mobile app.
Best for
- Solo therapists, counselors and psychologists who bill insurance
- Group practices that want per-clinician pricing and free non-clinical staff users
- Psychiatric prescribers who want e-prescribing, including controlled substances, in the chart
Not ideal for
- Medical practices outside behavioral health
- Residential or addiction treatment programs that need inpatient-style workflows
- Practices that want every feature included in one flat price

HIPAA, security and integrations
TherapyNotes says its software is HITRUST certified and that TherapyFuel holds an AI-focused HITRUST certification. Its security page lists FIPS 140-2 compliant encryption, onsite and offsite backups, role-based permissions, an activity log and two-factor authentication. Integrations are mostly built in: e-prescribing runs on Surescripts, claims go through TherapyNotes' electronic billing, and TherapySearch profiles feed appointment requests into the portal.
