Who Accountable is best for
Accountable is built for small and mid-size organizations that handle patient data but do not have a compliance department: dental offices, therapy practices, home health agencies, pharmacies and health-tech startups. Kevin Henry founded the company in 2013, and it says more than 10,000 organizations and 125,000 trained employees use the platform.
Best for
- Practices with up to about 20 staff that need a documented HIPAA program quickly
- Health-tech vendors that need to show covered-entity customers their HIPAA posture
- Offices that want employee training, BAAs and incident logs in one place
Not ideal for
- Companies that mainly need SOC 2 or ISO 27001 audit readiness
- Large hospitals that need an enterprise risk management program
Accountable pros and cons
Pros
- Transparent published pricing with month-to-month or discounted annual billing and no setup fee
- 7-day free trial and cancel-anytime monthly plans
- Compliance Copilot drafts policies, detects vendors and builds the data inventory
- Covers the core HIPAA program: security risk assessment, policies, training, BAAs, incident response and audit log
- Compliance success managers available by chat, email, phone or Slack, with audit support for OCR inquiries
Cons
- Exclusion screening, phishing simulation, breach monitoring and remediation plans require the Plus tier or higher
- Vulnerability scans and penetration tests are only in the $679+ Pro tier, and the site menu still marks both as coming soon
- Seat caps (15 or 20 employees) mean larger teams pay per extra user
- Its "HIPAA Certificate" is a vendor-issued completion record; HHS does not certify HIPAA compliance
Accountable pricing
As of October 2026, Accountable lists three plans:
- Basic HIPAA: $169 per month billed annually ($2,028 per year) or $199 month-to-month; 15 employees included, extra seats $9 per month. Includes Compliance Copilot, policies, security risk assessment, HIPAA and security training, incident response, data inventory and flow map, vendor and BAA management, Trust Center and audit log.
- Plus: $254 per month billed annually or $299 monthly; 15 employees, extra seats $15. Adds FWA, harassment and bloodborne pathogens training, vendor discovery, breach monitoring, phishing simulation, MFA and access reviews, exclusion screening, a compliance hotline, reports and remediation plans.
- Pro: $679 per month billed annually or $799 monthly; 20 employees, extra seats $19. Adds dedicated compliance support, twice-yearly vulnerability scanning, annual penetration testing and custom roles.
Setup is listed as included. Annual billing saves about 15%, and monthly plans can be cancelled without fees.
Key features
- Compliance Copilot: AI agent that drafts policies, runs the first pass of the risk assessment and detects vendors
- Security Risk Assessment with remediation guidance
- Policies & Procedures templates you can publish and assign
- HIPAA and security awareness training with reminders and completion tracking
- Vendor Management and BAA Management: track business associates, send and store BAAs
- Incident Response: an employee channel for reporting and documenting possible breaches
- Data Inventory & Flow Map, Audit Log, Trust Center & HIPAA Badge and multi-location management
HIPAA, security and integrations
Accountable is a compliance tool rather than a clinical system, so most practices use it alongside, not inside, their EHR. Its pricing page describes the platform as HIPAA compliant with 256-bit encryption. It does not publish a SOC 2 report or HITRUST certification for itself, and it does not publish terms on whether it signs a BAA with customers; ask during the trial if you plan to store PHI in incident records. Named software integrations are not published; vendor discovery on the Plus plan is the closest feature to an integration.
Accountable alternatives
- Compliancy Group — HIPAA compliance software with more coach-led, consultant-style guidance.
- Vanta — multi-framework automation (SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA) with cloud integrations, better for tech companies.
- Clearwater Security & Compliance — risk management and managed security for hospitals and larger health systems.
- Paubox — HIPAA-compliant email, a tool to pair with a compliance program rather than replace it.
