Who MDToolbox is best for
MDToolbox-Rx is for prescribers who need to send prescriptions electronically without buying a full EHR: solo clinicians, telemedicine providers and groups whose EHR lacks EPCS. It is a Surescripts-certified e-prescribing provider, its EPCS function has been audited by a qualified DEA auditor, and its Rx module is ONC-certified.
Best for
- Solo and small practices that want e-prescribing for about $30 a month per prescriber
- Telehealth and psychiatry prescribers who need EPCS for Schedule II–V drugs
- Practices that want to keep their current EHR and add a separate prescribing tool
Not ideal for
- Practices that want prescribing inside their charting and billing system

HIPAA, security and integrations
MDToolbox describes the system as HIPAA compliant with PHI encrypted. Its Rx module is certified to the ONC 2015 Edition criteria (CHPL product number 15.02.05.1832.MDTB.01.01.1.211105, last certified November 5, 2021) and it publishes ONC Real World Testing plans and results. EPCS sign-off uses two-factor authentication, as the DEA requires. It routes prescriptions over the Surescripts network, which the vendor says reaches 99% of US pharmacies. SOC 2 or HITRUST status and BAA terms are not published.
The system can share patient lists with practice management or EHR software through HL7 or CCD messages, an API and patient importers; MDToolbox also offers an API for embedding its prescribing inside another EHR.
