Who DrFirst is best for
DrFirst has sold e-prescribing software since 2000. Many clinicians use it without seeing the brand, because Rcopia is embedded in their EHR or hospital system. DrFirst says more than 420,000 prescribers and over 2,000 hospitals use its products. For individual prescribers and small practices, its iPrescribe app offers standalone mobile and desktop e-prescribing, including controlled substances.
Best for
- EHR and health IT vendors that want to embed e-prescribing rather than build it
- Hospitals and health systems that need medication history and business-continuity prescribing
- Solo prescribers and practices without an EHR (through iPrescribe)
- Prescribers of controlled substances who want PDMP data in the prescribing workflow
Not ideal for
- Practices that want a full EHR with charting and billing
- Buyers who want published pricing for Rcopia or enterprise products
- Practices whose current EHR already includes a different e-prescribing engine
DrFirst pros and cons
Pros
- EPCS with in-workflow PDMP data, plus 21 CFR 1311 audit reports listed by the vendor
- Medication history feed returning 12 months of fill data
- Smart Prescribe decision support surfaces dosing guidance, prior authorization help and distribution requirements as the prescription is written
- Real-time prescription benefit checks and electronic prior authorization
- HITRUST and SOC 2 Type II listed for Rcopia, iPrescribe, Backline and other products
- iPrescribe has published per-license pricing
Cons
- Rcopia and enterprise products are quote-only
- Rcopia is mostly sold through EHR vendors and hospitals, not directly to small practices
- Outcome figures such as the 45% fewer change requests the vendor cites come from its own pilot study
DrFirst pricing
DrFirst does not publish pricing for Rcopia, Backline or its enterprise services; these are quoted, often through an EHR partner. Its iPrescribe app does publish prices as of October 2026:
- Mobile: $30 per license per month, billed annually, for individual providers; unlimited prescriptions, including controlled substances, on iOS and Android
- Practice: $50 per license per month, billed annually; adds desktop access, analytics, prior authorization automation and multi-state controlled substance prescribing
- Enterprise: custom pricing with a one-time integration fee; adds EHR integration, single sign-on and dedicated support
Key features
- Rcopia E-Prescribing: new prescriptions, renewals, allergy and interaction alerts, and Smart Prescribe decision support
- EPCS: controlled substance prescribing with PDMP data in the workflow
- Medication History (MedHx): 12 months of fill data for reconciliation
- Price Transparency (myBenefitCheck): real-time prescription benefit and formulary information

HIPAA, security and integrations
DrFirst lists HITRUST certification and SOC 2 Type II reports covering Backline, EPCS, iPrescribe, Medication History, Price Transparency, E-Prescribing and Patient Engagement, along with TX-RAMP and 21 CFR 1311 EPCS audit reports. It publishes an ONC certification disclosure. Its products run standalone or inside an EHR; DrFirst says its products are used in 270 EHRs and health information systems.
