Who Athelas is best for
Athelas began in diagnostics and combined with Commure in 2023; it now sells revenue cycle management, documentation AI and an EHR to outpatient practices. Its RCM service is the product most people search for: Athelas staff and software handle eligibility, coding checks, claim submission, denials, payment posting and patient collections. It works with many existing EHRs, so you do not have to switch systems to use it.
Best for
- Physical therapy, occupational therapy, orthopedics, podiatry and family medicine practices
- Independent practices that want to outsource billing rather than hire more billers
- Practices with high denial rates or aging A/R that want automated appeals and payer follow-up
- Groups interested in pairing billing with an AI scribe or AI phone agents
Not ideal for
- Practices that want to keep billing in-house with their own staff and software
- Buyers who need published pricing or a large body of independent reviews
- Hospitals and large health systems with complex enterprise billing
Athelas pros and cons
Pros
- Full billing cycle covered, from eligibility and claim scrubbing to denial appeals and patient payments
- Integrates with many EHRs, including athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, AdvancedMD, Tebra, DrChrono, Elation and WebPT
- AI-generated appeals, bulk denial resubmission and payer portal bots for remittance follow-up
- Patient payment tools with cards, ACH, payment plans and automated reminders
- One vendor can also supply an ambient AI scribe, voice agents and an EHR
Cons
- Pricing is not published; you need a demo and quote
- Very few independent user reviews; results cited on its site are vendor case studies
- Credentialing is not listed among RCM services, so confirm if you need it
- A managed service means less day-to-day control over billing staff and priorities
Athelas pricing
As of 2026, Athelas does not publish prices for RCM, Air EHR, its scribe or voice agents; every product page leads to a demo request. Outsourced billing services are commonly priced as a percentage of collections, but Athelas has not disclosed its model, so ask for the fee basis in writing, which collections it applies to, and any setup or minimum fees. Air is marketed as everything included at one price, and Athelas offers an Air pilot.
Key features
- Athelas RCM: managed billing with pre-submission eligibility and coding checks, a claim rules engine, same-day submission, AI appeals and AR follow-up
- Air EHR: an ONC-certified, AI-native EHR with scheduling, waitlist, patient portal, intake, kiosk check-in and built-in billing
- Ambient AI scribe: drafts notes from the visit conversation and assists with coding
- Voice Agents: AI phone agents for scheduling, call routing and reminders
- Insights: billing and clinical dashboards
HIPAA, security and integrations
Athelas's trust center says data is stored on US-based infrastructure in HIPAA-compliant data centers, encrypted at rest with AES-256 and in transit with TLS 1.2 or higher, with keys held in hardware security modules. It lists HIPAA and SOC 2 Type II as independently audited but marks both "in progress / certified" without saying which, and it does not mention HITRUST or publish business associate agreement terms. Ask for the current SOC 2 report and a signed BAA before sharing patient data.
For integrations, the RCM page shows logos for athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, NextGen, MEDITECH, Cerner, AdvancedMD, Kareo (Tebra), WebPT, DrChrono, Elation, Practice Fusion, Experity, CharmEHR and several therapy EHRs. Athelas does not describe how each connection works, so confirm data flow for your system.
