The short answer

SimplePractice is built for therapists and other wellness clinicians, with published plans from $49 a month, a fast self-serve setup and AI note add-ons. Tebra is a broader platform for independent medical and mental health practices, with e-prescribing, labs, MIPS reporting, billing and patient marketing sold in quoted bundles. Solo therapists and small counseling groups will usually find SimplePractice simpler and cheaper to start. Mixed practices with prescribers, labs or heavier insurance billing may get more from Tebra.

Choose Tebra if your practice includes prescribers or medical services and needs labs, e-prescribing, MIPS reporting and billing in one platform.

Choose SimplePractice if you are a therapist or small counseling group that wants published pricing, a self-serve trial and therapy-specific tools.

Key differences

Who each is built for

SimplePractice serves health and wellness practitioners, mainly therapists and counselors, plus speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists, and reports about 250,000 practitioners on its platform. Its templates, Wiley Treatment Planners (Essential and Plus) and group telehealth (Plus) are shaped around therapy. Tebra serves independent practices across primary care, pediatrics, dermatology, mental health and nurse practitioner practices. Its EHR includes e-prescribing, lab orders and results, and MIPS reporting, which matter more to medical and psychiatric prescribers than to talk-therapy practices.

Pricing and how you buy

SimplePractice publishes prices and lets you sign up online: Starter at $49, Essential at $79 and Plus at $99 a month, with a 30-day free trial. Claims cost from $0.39 each as of October 1, 2026. Tebra quotes every deal after a demo. It licenses per prescribing provider (MD, DO, NP or PA), gives non-clinical staff unlimited access, and says providers billing 100 claims or fewer a month may qualify for lower-tier pricing. Therapy practices with no prescribers should ask Tebra how non-prescribing clinicians are licensed.

Prescribing and clinical depth

SimplePractice sells ePrescribe as an add-on at $49 a month plus an $89 setup fee, through DrFirst. That works for a psychiatric nurse practitioner seeing therapy-style caseloads. Tebra's EHR includes e-prescribing with interaction checks, lab ordering and results, and MIPS support in its EHR bundles, plus optional EPCS setup at about $75 per provider and PDMP integration at $500 per facility plus about $50 per user a year. Practices that order labs or report quality measures will find more of that work handled in Tebra.

Patient experience and marketing

Both help practices find clients. SimplePractice includes a Professional Website and Therapy Finder directory listing on all plans, online appointment requests and a client portal, with an appointment request widget on Plus. Tebra's All in One package, or its separate Patient Experience + Marketing package, adds online scheduling, custom reminders, review management, broadcast messaging, 80+ web profiles and Google Business Profile tools. Tebra's marketing tools are broader. SimplePractice's are simpler and included at a lower price.

Which should you choose?

For most solo therapists and small counseling groups, SimplePractice is the simpler choice. Tebra fits better when the practice also prescribes, orders labs or runs medical services alongside behavioral health.

Choose Tebra if:

  • Your practice includes MDs, DOs, NPs or PAs who prescribe and order labs
  • You report MIPS quality measures
  • You want review management and Google Business Profile tools from your EHR vendor

Choose SimplePractice if:

  • You are a therapist, counselor, SLP or OT and want therapy-focused templates
  • You want to see prices and start a trial without a sales call
  • You want AI note tools such as Note Taker as optional add-ons

If you bill insurance heavily as a therapy practice, also compare TherapyNotes; for psychiatry-focused groups, see Valant.

Tebra vs SimplePractice: FAQ

Is Tebra or SimplePractice better for a small therapy practice?

For a solo therapist or small counseling group, SimplePractice is usually the better fit. It is built for therapy, publishes prices from $49 a month, includes telehealth on every plan and can be set up without a sales call. Tebra is a stronger choice when the practice also has prescribers, orders labs or runs medical services, because those workflows are part of its EHR bundles.

How do Tebra and SimplePractice prices compare?

SimplePractice costs $49, $79 or $99 a month for a solo clinician, and Plus groups pay $74 for each added clinician in a group of two to five (less for larger groups), plus claim fees from $0.39. Tebra does not publish prices; it quotes bundles per prescribing provider and includes unlimited non-clinical staff. Get a written Tebra quote that states how therapists and other non-prescribers are counted.

Does SimplePractice or Tebra connect with labs and pharmacies?

Tebra's EHR sends prescriptions electronically with interaction checks and lets you order labs and view results in the chart. SimplePractice offers ePrescribe through DrFirst as a $49 monthly add-on with an $89 setup fee, but it does not publish lab interfaces. Psychiatric prescribers who order labs regularly should confirm the workflow in a demo or trial.

Do Tebra and SimplePractice sign a BAA?

Yes. Tebra's security page says it commits to HIPAA safeguards through its business associate agreement, and current customers can request security attestation reports. SimplePractice includes its BAA in the terms you accept when you create a trial account, and it says the platform is HIPAA compliant and HITRUST certified.

Can I move from SimplePractice to Tebra?

Yes, though plan for a structured migration. Export client demographics, documents and billing history from SimplePractice, then ask Tebra which data it imports and whether migration costs extra, since it does not publish migration fees. Keep SimplePractice active until outstanding claims are paid so you can post remittances in the system that sent them.
