Freed vs Heidi Health

Compared by PracticeAll's healthcare IT team · Updated · How we review

The short answer

Both are self-serve ambient AI scribes that solo clinicians can start without a sales call. Heidi is the cheaper way to begin, with a free plan that includes unlimited ambient documentation, while its paid Clinician seat costs more than any Freed plan. Freed is the simpler buy for US practices on browser-based EHRs, since its Premier plan pushes notes into the chart through a Chrome extension. Heidi's EHR integrations sit in its custom-priced Teams plan.

Choose Freed if you work in a browser-based EHR such as athenahealth, eClinicalWorks or Tebra and want one-click note push at a published per-clinician price.

Choose Heidi Health if you want to start on a free plan, need a desktop app that dictates into any field, or your group needs a quoted EHR integration.

Key differences

Pricing and plans

Freed publishes four plans. Starter is $39 per clinician per month on annual billing ($59 month-to-month) and caps notes at 40 a month. Core, with unlimited notes, is listed at $59 to $79. Premier is $104 a month billed annually or $119 monthly and adds EHR push, coding and letters. Heidi's free plan includes unlimited ambient documentation, with limited dictation, coding and advanced templates. Its Clinician seat costs $110 a month billed yearly or $150 monthly; a Max seat with five times the agent usage costs $299 or $409. Teams is quoted.

EHR integration

Freed's EHR Push is a Chrome extension: open a browser-based EHR, generate the note and send it into the chart. Freed names athenahealth, Practice Fusion, eClinicalWorks, Tebra, Elation, SimplePractice, Kipu, OptiMantra and ModMed. It requires Premier, and desktop-installed EHRs are not covered. Heidi lists deeper integrations, including writeback into Epic and Oracle Cerner and schedule sync with athenahealth and Veradigm, but its pricing table places EHR integration in the custom Teams plan. On individual plans, Heidi's Windows and macOS desktop app can dictate into any field on screen.

Documentation features

Both draft notes from in-person or telehealth visits using specialty templates, and both can produce patient letters and referrals, on Premier in Freed's case. Freed's Premier plan adds ICD-10 and CPT code suggestions, dictation and saved phrases. Heidi includes coding and dictation on paid plans and offers limited use on the free plan. Heidi also bundles clinical evidence answers with citations and AI agents that handle tasks such as referral letters, visit paperwork and patient recaps. Freed offers cited Clinical Evidence answers from Core upward.

Languages

Freed's pricing page lists 14 languages it can capture, including Spanish, Mandarin, Russian and Korean, and it writes the note in English. Heidi's site cites a 2026 evaluation of its transcription across 77 languages. Neither vendor publishes a head-to-head accuracy comparison, so clinicians who see many patients in Spanish or other languages should run both on the same visits before choosing.

Security and compliance

Freed states that it is HIPAA and HITECH compliant, SOC 2 Type 2 certified, signs BAAs, stores data in the US on Microsoft Azure, deletes recordings once the note is complete and trains AI only on de-identified notes. Heidi states HIPAA compliance, says it makes a BAA available to every covered entity it works with and hosts US data in the United States. Its site lists SOC 2 Type II attestation, ISO 27001 certification and Cyber Essentials Plus.

Which should you choose?

For a small US practice, the choice turns on how notes reach the EHR and how much you want to spend before committing.

Choose Freed if:

  • Your EHR runs in a browser and you want one-click note push
  • You want a published price that stays under $120 per clinician per month with coding included
  • You want to sign up without a sales call and test it on a 7-day trial with no credit card

Choose Heidi Health if:

  • You want to start on a free plan with unlimited ambient notes
  • You prefer a desktop app that can dictate into any application
  • Your group needs integration with Epic, Oracle Cerner, athenahealth or Veradigm and will accept a quote

If you are on eClinicalWorks, also look at Sunoh, and if you need native integration across several major EHRs, consider Suki.

Freed vs Heidi Health: FAQ

Is Freed or Heidi better for a small practice?

Both suit small practices because clinicians can sign up online without a sales process. Freed fits a US practice on a browser-based EHR that wants notes pushed into the chart at a published price. Heidi fits clinicians who want to start free or who prefer its desktop app. For groups, Freed's Groups plan and Heidi's Teams plan are both quoted.

How much more does Heidi cost than Freed?

At entry level Heidi costs less, because its free plan includes unlimited ambient documentation while Freed starts at $39 a month. Among paid plans Heidi costs more: its Clinician seat is $110 a month billed yearly or $150 monthly, compared with $104 to $119 for Freed Premier, which is Freed's top individual plan. Group pricing for both is by quote.

Do Freed and Heidi integrate with athenahealth?

Yes, in different ways. Freed pushes notes into athenahealth through its Chrome extension on the Premier plan. Heidi lists an athenahealth integration that syncs the schedule and pushes notes into the chart, but its pricing table places EHR integration in the custom Teams plan. Confirm which plan you need before buying either.

Are Freed and Heidi HIPAA compliant with a BAA?

Both say so. Freed states HIPAA and HITECH compliance, SOC 2 Type 2 certification and that it signs business associate agreements, with US data storage on Microsoft Azure. Heidi states HIPAA compliance, makes a BAA available to every covered entity it works with, hosts US data in the United States and lists SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001.

Can I try both Freed and Heidi before switching?

Yes. Freed offers a 7-day free trial without a credit card, and Heidi has a free plan plus a 14-day trial of its Clinician plan. Both draft notes you copy or push into your own EHR, so running each on a week of visits and comparing edits per note is a low-cost way to decide.
