Key differences

Pricing and fees

Neither vendor publishes plan prices. DrChrono sells three plans, Foundation, Growth and Premium, and publishes usage limits and fees: Foundation includes 250 text and 100 phone reminders and 500 e-faxes a month, with overages at 5 cents per text, 7 cents per faxed page and 10 cents per call. Extended lab integration costs $30 per provider a month, and integrated payments cost a $5 program fee plus 3.25% and 30 cents per card transaction. Tebra licenses per prescribing provider (MD, DO, NP or PA), includes unlimited non-clinical staff and says providers billing 100 claims or fewer a month may qualify for lower-tier pricing.

Mobile and documentation

DrChrono was built around Apple devices; its EHR app has been in the App Store since 2010 and runs on iPhone and iPad. Its EHR includes speech-to-text, custom macros and EverHealth Scribe for AI documentation. Tebra Mobile runs on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch and covers schedules and patient records. Tebra's EHR includes AI Note Assist, SOAP templates and macros. Clinicians who document at the bedside or move between rooms with a tablet may prefer DrChrono's approach.

Billing and revenue cycle

Both include claims, eligibility checks and patient payments. DrChrono runs its own clearinghouse, offers denial workflows and integrated payments, and provides full-service billing support. Its higher plans add automated revenue cycle workflows. Tebra's billing packages cover claims management, eligibility checks and patient payments, and its app lists a Tebra Managed Billing (RCM) module. Both also serve billing companies or billing-heavy practices, so ask each for references from practices of your size and specialty.

Patient engagement and marketing

DrChrono's OnPatient portal covers scheduling, secure messaging, digital intake forms and online payments, and its practice management tools include automated reminders and an AI no-show predictor. Tebra goes further into marketing: its All in One package, or the separate Patient Experience + Marketing package, adds online scheduling, custom reminders, review management, broadcast messaging, 80+ web profiles and Google Business Profile tools. If attracting new patients is a priority, Tebra covers more of it in-house.

Which should you choose?

Both fit small and mid-sized independent practices. The choice usually comes down to mobile charting and integrations versus built-in patient marketing.

Ownership matters mainly for roadmap and support, so ask each vendor about product plans during your evaluation.
