Candid Health vs Tebra

Compared by PracticeAll's healthcare IT team · Updated · How we review

The short answer

Candid Health and Tebra serve quite different buyers. Candid is a standalone, API-first claims automation platform for digital health companies, MSOs and growing medical groups that already have an EHR and some technical staff. Tebra is an all-in-one practice platform for independent practices, combining EHR, scheduling, billing, patient engagement and marketing, with optional outsourced billing through matched billing partners. For RCM alone, Candid offers deeper rules-based automation; Tebra offers simpler, built-in billing for practices that want one system and one login.

Choose Candid Health if you already have an EHR, bill high volumes across many payers or states, and want an automation layer that runs the claim lifecycle.

Choose Tebra if you are an independent practice that wants charting, scheduling, billing and patient tools in one system priced per provider.

Key differences

What you are buying

Candid sells only the revenue cycle: it takes claims from your EHR, checks them against payer and custom rules, submits them, follows them to payment and reports on results. You still need an EHR and scheduling system. Tebra sells the whole practice system: scheduling, charting, e-prescribing, eligibility, claims, patient payments, telehealth, reminders, websites and reviews. Comparing them for RCM means comparing a specialist automation layer with the billing module of an all-in-one system.

Billing automation

Candid's rules engine ships with preconfigured payer rules that it keeps updated and lets customers add custom rules; it checks codes, eligibility and required data before submission and measures the touchless claim rate. Tebra checks eligibility in real time, auto-scrubs claims and submits them in batches, tracks denials and collections on dashboards, and offers robotic process automation. Its AI Billing Assistant flags claims most likely to be denied and explains why, while billers make the final decision.

Outsourcing and support

Tebra's managed billing connects a practice with a matched billing partner that knows its specialty; the partner works inside Tebra, so the practice keeps visibility without switching systems. Candid offers services it describes as partnership beyond software "for when a human touch is required," launched a software-only option in 2023, and markets a separate offering to billing services. A small practice that wants to hand off billing entirely will find Tebra's partner matching the more direct route.

Pricing and fit

Tebra licenses per prescribing provider, includes unlimited non-clinical staff and offers lower-tier pricing for providers billing 100 or fewer claims a month. Bundles range from Billing Starter and EHR Starter to Practice Essentials and Practice Automation. Candid quotes based on organization size, volume and services, and it markets to medical groups, MSOs, digital health organizations and billing services. Neither publishes dollar amounts.

Which should you choose?

Most small independent practices are better matched to Tebra, because they need the EHR and scheduling as well as billing. Candid is the better match when an organization already has its clinical system and wants claims automation at scale.

Choose Candid Health if:

  • You are a digital health company, MSO or multi-state group with an existing EHR
  • Your EHR is Healthie, Elation, Canvas or a custom platform with API access
  • You want to write custom claim rules and measure touchless claims

Choose Tebra if:

  • You need an EHR, scheduling and billing in one system
  • You want per-provider pricing with front desk and billing staff included
  • You may outsource billing to a billing partner matched by Tebra

Candid Health vs Tebra: FAQ

How does Candid Health's RCM software compare to Tebra?

Candid is a dedicated claims automation platform that plugs into an existing EHR and runs the claim lifecycle with a configurable rules engine. Tebra's billing is one module of an all-in-one system that also handles charting, scheduling and patient engagement, with eligibility checks, claim scrubbing, denial tracking and an AI Billing Assistant. Candid goes deeper on automation; Tebra is simpler for a small practice.

Is Candid Health or Tebra better for a small practice?

Tebra, in most cases. It is built for independent practices, includes the EHR and scheduling a small practice needs, prices per prescribing provider with staff included, and can match you with an outside billing partner. Candid does not include an EHR, works best with technical resources, and markets mainly to digital health companies, MSOs and growing groups. A small practice already on a Candid-integrated EHR could still evaluate it.

Does Candid Health integrate with Tebra?

Candid does not list Tebra among its published pre-built EHR integrations, which include Healthie, Elation, Canvas, Medplum, Welkin and Avon. Candid offers APIs and HL7v2 for custom connections. Tebra includes its own billing and claims tools, so most Tebra practices bill inside Tebra. Ask both vendors before planning to combine them.

Are Candid Health and Tebra HIPAA compliant, and do they sign a BAA?

Tebra says it signs a business associate agreement, bases its security program on the HITRUST CSF, AICPA trust criteria and NIST frameworks, and has a service auditor's report on its controls. Candid states its platform is HIPAA compliant, shows a SOC 2 compliant badge and completed a Type 1 SOC 1 examination in 2026. Request the BAA and current audit reports from either vendor.

Can a practice move from Tebra billing to Candid Health?

It can, but it means keeping Tebra or another system for charting and scheduling, building an integration so claims flow to Candid, and re-enrolling for electronic remittances. That effort usually makes sense only for organizations with high claim volume or multi-state billing. Smaller practices unhappy with in-house billing may find a Tebra billing partner a simpler change.
