The short answer

Waystar and Inovalon both sell eligibility, claims and denial software that sits beside your EHR, but they emphasize different things. Waystar is a broad revenue cycle platform with AltitudeAI automation, prior authorization, patient estimates and patient payments, used from physician practices to large health systems. Inovalon's provider line offers tiered eligibility and claims products, direct Medicare DDE access and post-acute tools such as MDS. Pick Waystar for breadth and AI features, Inovalon for Medicare and post-acute billing.

Choose Waystar if you want one platform for authorizations, estimates, claims, denials and patient payments, with AI applied across those workflows.

Choose Inovalon if Medicare claims and DDE access, post-acute workflows or starter-tier eligibility and claims tools matter most.

Key differences

AI and claims automation

Waystar markets AltitudeAI as predictive, generative and agentic AI running across its platform to automate work, prioritize tasks and prevent errors. It cites a 98.5% average first-pass clean claims rate. Inovalon's provider pages describe automation rather than branded AI: automated claim creation, edits and resubmission, automated secondary claims and auto-filled payer information during eligibility checks. Inovalon reports a 98%+ first-pass payer acceptance rate for Claims Management Pro from its January 2026 internal data. Both figures are vendor-reported.

Product range

Waystar covers eligibility, patient estimates, coverage detection, authorization, charge integrity, claims and attachments, remittances, patient payments, denial and appeal management and analytics. Inovalon's revenue cycle line includes registration workflow, eligibility, insurance discovery, demographic verification, patient statements and payments, claims management, Medicare claims management and RCM Intelligence dashboards. Inovalon also sells MDS, quality, safety and workforce scheduling tools for hospitals and skilled nursing, which Waystar does not. Waystar is publicly traded (Nasdaq: WAY); Inovalon has been privately held since a Nordic Capital-led consortium completed its acquisition in November 2021.

Medicare and post-acute billing

Inovalon's Medicare Claims Management gives one dashboard from EDI submission directly to CMS through DDE system access, with real-time status tracking and error flags. That matters for skilled nursing, home health, hospice and hospital billing teams. Waystar offers Medicare Management and Medicare Analytics and serves home health, hospice and skilled nursing too, so ask both for a demo on your own Medicare claim types.

Integration and connectivity

Waystar publishes a supported systems list of PM and hospital systems, including Epic, eClinicalWorks, NextGen and AdvancedMD, and lists 5,000+ payer connections. Staff can work in Waystar or inside their PM system. Inovalon users work in the browser-based Inovalon Provider portal, which connects to 2,300+ payers for eligibility and offers real-time API integrations so data shows in one place. Confirm whether your EHR is supported before comparing prices.

Which should you choose?

For AI-driven claims automation across the whole revenue cycle, Waystar offers more on its public pages. For Medicare-heavy and post-acute billing, Inovalon's DDE access and care management tools are the stronger fit.

Choose Waystar if:

  • You want prior authorization, estimates and patient payments alongside claims
  • You want AI features applied across eligibility, claims and denials
  • Your PM or hospital system is on Waystar's supported list

Choose Inovalon if:

  • You bill Medicare heavily and want direct CMS submission and DDE access
  • You run skilled nursing or another post-acute setting and also need MDS or staffing tools
  • You want to start with a Starter tier and upgrade later

For a clearinghouse with optional outsourced billing, look at TriZetto Provider Solutions, or Candid Health for API-first claim automation.

Waystar vs Inovalon: FAQ

Is Waystar or Inovalon better for a small practice?

Both can serve a small practice that bills in-house. Inovalon's Claims Management Starter and Eligibility Verification Starter are built for teams that want one simple dashboard. Waystar works with many small-practice PM systems and adds patient payments and estimates, but much of its suite goes beyond what a small practice needs. Neither is an EHR, so you still need separate charting and scheduling software.

Which costs more, Waystar or Inovalon?

Neither publishes prices, so both require a quote. Inovalon sells tiered products, with Starter, Standard and Pro for eligibility and Starter and Pro for claims. Get per-transaction fees, setup costs and contract length in writing, and compare the same modules from each vendor.

Do Waystar and Inovalon integrate with Epic?

Waystar lists Epic on its supported systems list, along with eClinicalWorks, NextGen, AdvancedMD and Kareo. Inovalon offers real-time API integrations and a partner API program, and says all of the top 25 U.S. provider systems use its software, but it does not publish an EHR list. Ask Inovalon to confirm the connection for your specific EHR version.

Are Waystar and Inovalon HIPAA compliant, and do they sign a BAA?

Both process protected health information as business associates, so expect a BAA. Waystar announced HITRUST CSF certification in April 2021 and should be asked for its current letter. Inovalon's provider product pages do not list HIPAA attestations, SOC 2 or HITRUST, so request its security reports and BAA terms during procurement.

Can you use Waystar and Inovalon together?

Yes. Both sit beside your EHR rather than replacing it, so you can use one vendor as the main clearinghouse and add the other for a specific job, such as Inovalon for Medicare DDE access or MDS work, or Waystar for patient estimates and payments. Running two vendors adds cost and logins, so confirm the overlap before signing both.
